California is the 3rd largest state in the United States based on area but it is the largest in population with over 33 million residents. It is referred to as the Golden State, a nickname that dates back to the 1849 gold rush of California. A time when thousands of people flocked to the area hoping to get rich after news spread that gold had been found in the land.

California is located on the west coast of the United States offering a nice mild and tropical feel to much of the state. The geography of California varies more greatly than any other state.

California is home of the highest, Mount Whitney and lowest, Death Valley, points in the contiguous United States. The climate also varies greatly. With searing heat in the desserts to snow capped mountains. California is an outdoorsman’s paradise.

One of the leading industries in California is tourism and that’s no surprise. There is plenty to see and do when visiting California. Los Angeles is the biggest city in California and is the location of famous Hollywood, an entertainment capital of the world. The San Francisco Bay area is well known for its Golden Gate Bridge and unique cable cars running through the streets. At the southern end of the state is the San Diego area with beautiful beaches, and lots of water sports and activities such as surfing. San Diego is also home of the popular San Diego Zoo, Sea World, and the Wild Animal Park. Southern California is also where many of the state’s theme parks are located including Disney Land.
